摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting a forward object allowing to detect a road shape ahead of an own vehicle precisely. <P>SOLUTION: The forward object detection device comprises a vehicle behavior detection section 2 which detects the position of the own vehicle, a road shape decision section 31 which acquires road shape data indicating a road shape ahead of the own vehicle on the basis of the detected position of the own vehicle and map database, a laser radar 1, and an arithmetic section 3 which groups detecting points which are adjacent to each other and correspond to a road shape indicated by the road shape data out of the detecting points detected by the laser radar 1 using a predetermined arithmetic method, detects them as road structures, and detects a road shape ahead of the own vehicle on the basis of the position distribution of the detecting points detected as road structures. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
