PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the safety when a detergent is stored in a detergent container of a washing machine and to enhance the convenience of the washing machine with the detergent container disposed on the inner side of an upper lid. SOLUTION: A drum is driven/rotated with the upper lid closed and locked not to be opened, and the quantity of the laundry is detected (S2-S6). After that, the drum is rotated to a lock position to lock the drum (S7), and the lock of the upper lid is released to permit the upper lid opening (S8). Though an appropriate standard quantity of the detergent according to the quantity of load is known at the time of termination of detection of the quantity of load, the standard quantity of the detergent is not displayed till the lock of the upper lid is released, but is displayed after the lock of the upper lid is released (S9). Accordingly, opening of the upper lid when the drum is not locked for detecting the quantity of loads can be prevented. Furthermore, as the lock of the upper lid is released when the user checks the display of the standard quantity of the detergent, such a situation can be avoided as the upper lid would not be opened when the user, referring to the display, puts the detergent into the washing machine.
