The invention relates to a method and device for detecting at least two operating modes of an electric unit (10) supplied by an electric line (14) in a motor vehicle. The inventive method consists in comparing the frequency characteristic of an electric signal such as said signal propagates through the electric line (14) with at least two value ranges each of which is associated with an operating mode and, afterwards in deriving the operating mode of said electric unit (10) in the form of the operating mode associated with the value range to which the characteristic is allocated. A method for controlling said unit is also disclosed.
