PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system capable of effectively compensating signal degradation caused by PMD on an optical transmission line.

SOLUTION: The system comprises; a polarization separation part 1 for separating received light into polarization modes; a detection part 24 for detecting the amount of delay of received light per separated polarization mode; light delay parts 20-1 and 20-2 which give prescribed polarization mode dispersion to received light and consist of piezoelectric elements; and a control part 23 which controls the light delay parts in accordance with the amount of delay of received light per polarization mode, which is detected by the detection part 24.
