PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processing apparatus and method related to SIMD processing. SOLUTION: The data processing apparatus 2 comprises a register data storage operable to store data elements, an instruction decoder 14, 16 operable to decode an instruction with a generated constant and having a data value associated therewith, and a data processor 18 operable to perform data processing within parallel processing lanes on at least one source operand in response to the data processing instruction decoded by the instruction decoder 16. The data processor is operable in response to the decoded instruction with the generated constant and associated data value to expand at least a data portion 1210 of the associated data value. The expansion is performed to generate a constant 1240 forming one of the at least one source operand, in response to the instruction with the generated constant 1240 and depending on a selected function.
