PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of a projection type image display device and to improve the cooling function of an optical element. SOLUTION: An optical element holding device comprises an optical element formed like a rectangle viewed from an optical axis direction, a 1st holding member for holding the optical element and a 2nd holding member for holding the 1st holding member so as to adjust a rotational position approximately around the optical axis of the optical element. The 1st holding member comprises contact parts to be inscribed with the 2nd holding member so as to be slid in the rotational direction of the 1st holding member in each of the major side direction and minor side direction of the optical element and a 1st distance between the contact part formed in the minor side direction and the optical axis is shorter than a 2nd distance between the contact part formed in the major side direction and the optical axis.
