摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display using an optical film obtained by stacking a polarizing plate and a phase differential film, capable of achieving an easily viewable display having a high contrast ratio and operating in an IPS (in-plane switching) mode. <P>SOLUTION: In the transmission type liquid crystal display having a liquid crystal cell driven in the IPS mode and a pair of polarizing plates, the optical film laminated in such a way that an axis of absorption of the polarizing plate and an axis of a delay phase of the phase differential film are made orthogonal or parallel to each other is disposed. In the optical film, the polarizing plate is obtained by laminating a transparent protective film on both faces of a polarizer, wherein an intrasurface phase differential Re1 of the transparent protective film is &le;10 nm, a phase differential Rth of the film in the thickness direction is 30-100 nm, an Nz value of the phase differential film satisfies 0.1-0.8, an intrasurface phase differential Re2 (Re2 = (nx2 - ny2 ) &times; d2) of the film is 60-300 nm and an extraordinary beam refractive index direction of a liquid crystal substance in the liquid crystal cell and the axis of absorption of the polarizing plate of the optical film on the incident side are parallel to each other when no voltage is applied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
