PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power steering device capable of compatibly facilitating a steering operation for avoiding collision and securing a straight travel stability performance. SOLUTION: This device comprises a wheel speed sensor 13, a steering wheel angle sensor 15, and a laser radar 11 and a CCD camera 12 recognizing articles positioned in front of a traveling lane, on which a vehicle 1 concerned is traveling. ECU 30 calculates a distance between the vehicle 1 and the articles based on the information from the article recognizing means 11, 12. When the distance is not more than a predetermined value and a steering wheel angle relative to a vehicle speed is larger than a predetermined value, the ECU calculates an auxiliary steering torque with an avoiding characteristic larger than an auxiliary steering torque with a normal characteristic, and controls an electric motor 21 in a manner to assist steering wheel steering of a driver with the auxiliary steering torque with the avoiding characteristic.
