PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ranging device of a camera which performs highly accurate ranging even in a backlight scene which is a photographic scene difficult for a passive system ranging device to deal with. SOLUTION: The ranging device of the camera is the ranging device for a passive type camera which ranges an object based on output signals of luminous distribution by line sensors 2a, 2b, based on so-called principle of triangular ranging, however, focal distance is detected before a ranging operation by a focal distance detector of a photographic lens, setting areas of a plurality of backlight judgment areas set in predetermined ranges on the line sensors and a monitor area for specifying a range for outputting data of a part with the highest luminance in object image data in an area set during an integration operation are switched according to the detected focal distance.
