Recombinant yeast cells (A) for detecting estrogenic compounds (X). Recombinant yeast cells (A) include an expression plasmid (EP) containing a promoter (P1) linked to an estrogen-receptor gene (I) and a reporter plasmid (RP) containing an inducible promoter (P2) that includes an estrogen response element (ERE), linked to a reporter gene (II) that encodes a fluorescent protein or a secreted enzyme. The receptor encoded by (I) is transactivated by a substance (X) that has estrogenic activity and can bind to ERE, inducing expression of (II). Independent claims are also included for: (1) detecting substances (X) with estrogenic activity by incubating (A) with a test sample and detecting fluorescence or activity of a secreted enzyme; (2) kit for detecting (X) comprising (A) and detection/control substances; and (3) biosensor for detecting (X) comprising (A) and a transducer.
