<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll made of ceramic in which the cracking of a sleeve(s) made of ceramic can be prevented at the time when a heat cycle of heating and cooling is applied in the use of the roll even if inexpensive carbon steel of a relative low alloy or alloy steel for structural purposes of a low alloy is used as a metallic shaft material. <P>SOLUTION: The roll made of ceramic is used for producing a steel sheet in a hot rolling line. The roll is obtained by fitting one or more sleeves made of ceramic to the outer circumference of a metallic shaft material, and is characterized in that an aluminum alloy-coated layer or a chromium alloy-coated layer is formed on the surface of the metallic shaft material.
