PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of rock wool whereby the lightweight rock wool having a low thermal conductivity and a small average fiber diameter can be manufactured at a low cost. SOLUTION: In the method, the rock wool is manufactured by forming a fiber from a melt which has its components adjusted to essentially comprise at least SiO<SB>2</SB>, CaO, MgO and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>. The melt has its composition adjusted to comprise 0.85-1.25 (CaO(wt.%)+MgO(wt.%))/SiO<SB>2</SB>(wt.%), 3-15 wt.% MgO, 8-20 wt.% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 1-10 wt.% CaF<SB>2</SB>and≤3 wt.% other unavoidable impurities.
