Multicomponent spunbond filaments (24) including a core (36) of superabsorbent polymer surrounded by a thermoplastic polymer sheath (34) that is liquid permeable. The superabsorbent polymer in the filament core (36) absorbs liquids that penetrate through liquid pathways defined in the filament sheath (34) to the core (36). The spunbond filaments (21) are suitable for forming an absorbent core (64) of an article that absorbs liquids, such as a disposable hygienic article (58) used for absorbing aqueous body fluids.
