Vortex valve with adjustable inlet

A vortex valve is provided with an adjustable inlet 11 so that the characteristics of the valve can be altered. This may be provided by an arcuate plate 20 which can be displaced over the outer wall 4 to adjust the area of the inlet 11. The valve may have a cylindrical body 4, and the inlet 11 may be defined by a tangential extension of the cylindrical wall 4 and the axial end walls 18, thereby forming an approximately rectangular inlet. Retaining means may be provided to retain the sliding plate in the adjusted position.
