Electrical connector assembly comprising a first connector (10) and a second connector which are engageable with each other. Each of the first and second connectors has signal contacts (11) disposed in two rows (11a, 11b), a grounding member (12) disposed between the rows (11a, 11b) of signal contacts (11) and a housing (13) that holds the signal contacts and the grounding member (12). The electrical connector and electrical connector assembly increase the reliability of a grounding path, require only a small number of component parts and are suitable for high-speed signal transmission. A first grounding plate (121) and a second grounding plate (122) of each grounding member (12) are disposed in the immediate vicinity of the rows (11a, 11b) of signal contacts (11) and the housing (13) has a through opening (133). Therefore, a connection section (123) of the grounding member that joins the first and second grounding plates (121,122) can be visually checked.
