The locking mechanism (7) for fixing the two stand sections into position relative to each other comprises a ratchet mechanism (8, 9) which allows movement in the direction away from the bottom end (2) of the stand (1) and prevents movement in the opposite direction. A rotary washing line has a telescopic stand with one section (5) being anchored in the ground (3) and another section (6) having arms (4) connected to it. The arms, which have wires extending between them, can be folded away into a position in which they lie flat against the stand.
