[Also in Group XXII] A method of making needle-bearing cages comprises, forming in a rectilinear strip of e.g. metal or plastics material a series of openings the flanks of which are locally uniformly shaped by a punch(es) so that the width of the openings adjacent to one face of the strip correspond to a needle diameter plus a clearance allowance whilst adjacent to the other face the opening is less than a needle diameter, bending the blank into a cylinder so that said narrow opening is outermost and welding tabs formed at one end of the strip to recesses formed at the opposite end A strip of material 1 of e.g. metal or plastics has punched openings 2 of a width l, end tabs 23 and stepped ends 25. The flanks 6 of the openings are partially punched by a tool A to produce flanks 8 of width d having radii 10. The strip is formed into a cylinder with the narrower side of the openings outermost and the faces 24 of the tabs 23 buttwelded to the opposite end faces 25 or the tabs 23 are placed over the opposite ends 25 and pressure-welded, in both cases the gap formed by jointing the ends is of a width l<SP>11</SP>. Needle rollers B are sprung into the gaps 2 from the inside of the cage through the narrow gap d<SP>1</SP> produced by the converging of the walls 8 during the cylindrical forming operation. In a modification the rollers are retained by a projecting portion 11 produced on the flanks 6 by a punch having a concave side form c.</p> |
