Preparatory to threading-in slivers at the input of processing apparatus the slivers are diverted to collecting means until the threading- in can be completed. The invention has particular application to the forwarding of slivers in side by side relationship to drafting apparatus from a plurality of machines, such as carding machines CM, from the calender rollers of which slivers pass into suction pipes Q, R, S, T to be drawn into a collector box L until withdrawn through openings Q<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>1</SP> and inserted between rollers of a draw-box J. Another form of apparatus described has means for conducting slivers over tables to a draw-box, one of the tables being gapped to provide an intake to a suction duct.
