Fibers are brought to the external surface of a perforated (44), rotating cone (40) at a feed location spaced away from a deposition zone on a co-rotating turntable (30). They are held onto the cone by reduced pressure in its hollow interior (46). The fibers (10) are carried on to the point of deposition onto the turntable, by rotation of the cone about its axis. A local interruption of suction through the perforations, causes deposition of the fibers. The fibers are supplied to a slanting surface of the cone. Its length along the cone equals the width of the annular preform. Its extent around the cone is defined by meridian planes of the cone, which include an angle of 10degrees-40degrees. A feed channel supplies the fibers. The fibers are compressed after deposition on the turntable, and are added in several successive layers. Spacing between cone and turntable is increased progressively in accordance with successive layering. The fibers are bonded to each other, to form an annulus which can be handled, by needling.
