The use of agents (I) which directly or indirectly stimulate the expression of human beta -defensins of type 2 (hBD2) and/or type 3 (hBD3) without causing inflammatory, irritation or intolerance reactions is claimed in the production of (a) bactericidal and/or fungicidal cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions or (b) bactericial compositions for the tissue reconstruction sector, for use in formation of reconstructed epidermis and skin and in maintaining the survival of cutaneous biopsies. ACTIVITY : Antibacterial; Fungicide; Dermatological; Antiseborrheic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : hBD2 and/or hBD3 expression stimulant. In tests in normal human keratinocyte cultures, addition of peony flower at 1 wt. % stimulated expression of hBD3 by 192% (relative to 100% for the positive control tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha )) without inducing any expression of MIP3alpha .
