PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission for a vehicle capable of achieving forward five gear stages and a backward gear stage by mounting input-side and output-side single planetary gear devices between an input member and an output member, and connecting and fixing the input member, the output member and elements of the single planetary gear devices by a total of six or less clutches and brakes. SOLUTION: The input-side and output-side single planetary gear devices are mounted between the input member and the output member. The elements of the single planetary gear devices are respectively composed of input-side first to third elements, and output-side first to third elements successively arranged at intervals corresponding to a gear ratio in a velocity diagram, and the input member, the output member, the input-side first to third elements, and the output-side first to third elements are selectively connected and fixed by the clutches and the brake of six or less in total to achieve the forward five gear stages and the backward gear stage.
