PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding device ensuring a desired measurement area in a process wherein the sheets are nipped by at least two front and rear conveying means and not detecting the superposing of the sheets in the state where a rear end of the sheet is removed from the conveying means in an upstream side, when the superposing of the sheets during conveying is detected by an optical sensor such as a supersonic sensor or a photodiode. SOLUTION: At least two first and second conveying means 4, 5 for nipping and conveying the sheets are arranged in a sheet guide 3 from a stacker 1 to a processing position at positions with a distance. The superposing feeding detection means 6 such as the supersonic sensor for detecting the superposing of the sheets and a sheet end detection means 7 for detecting a rear end of the sheet are arranged between the first and second conveying means. The first conveying means and the second conveying means are set to a shorter gap than length of the conveyable sheet of the minimum size and form the state where the sheet is always nipped by both first and second conveying means. An output signal of the superposing feeding detection means 6 is compared with a predetermined set value. A conveying amount (length) of the sheet until the rear end of the sheet passes through the sheet end detection means 7 is detected from a detection signal of the superposing feeding detection means 6. When the detected sheet conveying amount is shorter than the predetermined conveying length, the superposed state of the sheets is determined while annulling the detection signal of the superposing feeding detection means 6.
