PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method or the like for rapidly and readily assaying mitochondrial toxicity possessed by a material. SOLUTION: The method for assaying the mitochondrial toxicity possessed by the material comprises (1) the first step for bringing cultured cells into contact with ethidium bromide, (2) the second step for bringing the cultured cells into contact with a test material after the first step or at the same time as the first step, (3) the third step for measuring a survival rate of the cultured cells after the second step, and (4) the fourth step for evaluating the mitochondrial toxicity of the material based on the difference obtained by comparing the survival rate of the cultured cells measured at the third step with the survival rate of the cultured cells of a control.
