Butadiene is selectively polymerized from a liquid phase containing also one or more butenes with the aid of a catalyst formed from at least one halide of cobalt or nickel and a FriedelCrafts catalyst or a compound of a metal of Group Ia, IIa p or IIIb which contains a metalcarbon or a metal-hydrogen bond. Cobaltous and nickelous chlorides and bromides are preferred, while aluminium chloride or bromide, aluminium diethyl chloride, aluminium dipropyl chloride, their bromides, aluminium ethyl sesquichloride, sodium and lithium hydride, aluminium alkyl hydrides, complex alkali metal aluminium hydrides, zinc diethyl and magnesium diethyl are also specified. The catalyst components may be brought together in aromatic (preferred) or aliphatic hydrocarbon diluents including cyclohexane, cyclopentane and cyclononane, which diluents may also be used in the polymerization.
