<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tar decomposition catalyst with which tar is efficiently decomposed at a low cost and the decomposed tar is recovered as fuel gas when thermally decomposing biomass, and to provide a utilizing method of the tar decomposition catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: When biomass, in particular, wood biomass is thermally decomposed under a low temperature condition of 600°C by using a composition containing iron oxide such as FeO, Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and Fe<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>as a catalyst, the tar produced in a devolatilization process is decomposed by almost 100 percent and can be recovered as fuel gas. Even when the tar decomposition catalyst is repeatedly used, the high catalytic activity is maintained and is extremely inexpensive as the catalyst. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
