PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure the installation space of a circuit board without increasing a reading placing table in size, in an image reading apparatus provided with the reading placing table incorporating the circuit board constituting a reading unit and a control unit and functioning as a flat bed scanner. SOLUTION: A bottom chassis 17 protruding from a side wall 152 to the outside is assembled into the bottom of a frame 16 formed like a rectangular in planar view to configure a chassis 13. A pair of guide rails 19 for scanning a full rate carriage 120 and a half rate carriage 121 forming a CCD reading unit 12 are formed along the inside of the side wall 152 and a side wall 157. The lower part of the side wall 152 is recessed to the inside of the frame 16 by the guide rails 19, and a circuit board 14 is arranged on a protrusion 17a of the bottom chassis 17.
