A chain tensioner, e.g. for a timing chain in an IC engine, has the tensioner shoe (3) mounted on the outside of the engine block (1) and supported by a central sprung cylinder under the shoe. To provide a balanced support for a range of operating conditions the ends of the shoe are braced on the engine block by two outer cylinders (10, 11, 4, 5) which including damping means to reduce any vibration effects. The damping can be enhanced by connection (9) to a hydraulic system.
