A high pressure pump, e.g. for a vehicle, has a cam driven reciprocating piston rod whose free end moves into a pump space bore. The piston rod and cam follower (34) are made in one piece and has a recess in the cam follower to hold a roller which rolls over the drive cam. The spiral spring presses onto the rear flat flange of the cam follower.
