<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and stably manufacturing a compound oxide catalyst having uniform and stable high performance in an industrial scale used for manufacturing an unsaturated aldehyde and/or an unsaturated carboxylic acid in response to the vapor phase oxidation by a molecular oxygen from an olefin and an unsaturated aldehyde. <P>SOLUTION: The manufacturing method comprises a molding process for a powder containing a catalyst component and a firing process for the molded body obtained from the molding process. The molding process is a process of molding the powder containing a catalyst component by adding graphite particles in an amount of 0.5-10 wt.% in terms of outer percentage, where the content of the graphite particles having diameters not more than 50 μm is not less than 98 wt.% and the combustion start temperature of the graphite particles by the differential thermal analysis (DTA) is higher by ≥50°C than the firing temperature in the following firing process.
