PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector with an obstacle detecting device capable of surely detecting the existence of an obstacle by automatically updating a reference screen when the projecting condition of a projector to a screen is changed, and to provide an obstacle detecting method. SOLUTION: When the projecting condition of the projector 10 to the screen 70 such as inclination in a perpendicular direction, zoom and focus is changed, the change of the projecting condition is detected by respective movement detectors 54, 55 and 56 and a test pattern for detecting the obstacle is projected to the screen 70. Then, the reference screen being the reference of comparison for detecting the obstacle between the screen 70 and the projector 10 is automatically updated by the video of the test pattern picked up by an imaging device 32, and compared with the acquired image of the test pattern for detecting the obstacle so as to detect the obstacle.
