The present invention provides a method and apparatus for reducing the concentration of NO<SUB>x </SUB>in a gas stream. In one embodiment, the method comprises injecting a reducing agent to a gas stream comprising NO<SUB>x</SUB>; injecting a NO<SUB>x</SUB>-reducing catalyst into the gas stream; chemically reducing at least a portion of the NO<SUB>x </SUB>using said reducing agent and the NO<SUB>x</SUB>-reducing catalyst, thereby producing nitrogen and spent NO<SUB>x</SUB>-reducing catalyst; and removing the spent NO<SUB>x</SUB>-reducing catalyst from the gas stream. The present invention also provides a method and apparatus for reducing the concentration of NO<SUB>x </SUB>and another vapor phase contaminant in a gas stream, wherein this additional contaminant is adsorbed by the NO<SUB>x</SUB>-reducing catalyst.
