PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of retreating a shield machine, for positively, easily, and smoothly retreating the shield machine, and also to provide a shield retreating jig which facilitates exchange or repair of cutters mounted on a cutter head of the shield machine, and contributes to effective use of a narrow work space. SOLUTION: In retreat of the shield machine (1) along an inner wall of a tunnel which is constructed by annularly assembling segments (15), the shield retrieving jig (20) which protects a tail seal (13) of the shield machine (1) at the time of retreating the shield machine (1) and seals a gap between an inner peripheral surface of the tail seal (13) and an outer peripheral surface of a segment ring, is interposed in the gap. Thus while the segments (15) forming a segment ring are removed by means of a shield jack (6), the shield machine (1) and the shield retrieving jig (20) are retreated together.
