PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera realizing quick focusing and further realizing the focusing without causing cost rise associated with a photodetecting element for focusing and an optical member such as a half mirror. SOLUTION: Incident luminous flux is deflected in two directions by a split prism 2, and two images formed with the luminous flux are detected by an imaging device 3, and the focused state of a subject image by a photographic lens 1 is arithmetically calculated based on image shift amount obtained according to a detected image position, whereby the lens 1 is moved to a focusing position. At the time of photographing, the prism 2 is made to retreat from the optical axis of the lens 1 by a split prism retreating device 7, whereby the prism 2 is made optically ineffective.
