<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device for a character, and the like, which can robustly detect without increasing the calculation cost, corresponding to occlusion or change in the photographing environment. <P>SOLUTION: A candidate considered to be a region of human body is extracted from an image by a feature extracting part 102. Probability for the likelihood of the region for each of these candidates is obtained by a probability calculating part 103, the likelihood of its being a human body is calculated stochastically by a probability calculating part 105 for the person, utilizing the probability for the likelihood for the region and correlation function among the candidates.
