PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and inexpensively measure a depth of a hardened layer formed on a workpiece. SOLUTION: The measuring device has a measuring portion 32 arranged on an approximately central part of a plate member. The measuring method comprises making a first base line 34 or a second base line 36 of the measuring portion 32 match with an end face 56 of a cup portion 14 of the workpiece 12, and at the same time, making a first or second auxiliary line 42 or 44 formed approximately parallel to the first base line 34, or a third or fourth auxiliary line 46 or 48 formed approximately parallel to the second base line 36 match with outer circumferential surfaces 50 and 50a of a large diameter portion 20 of the workpiece 12; reading the depth of a quench hardened layer 24 in the vicinity of a connection part 25 of the workpiece 12 by using a scale 40 linearly extended from a circular arc part 38 which matches with a recess 22 of the workpiece 12.
