PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition excellent in safety and capable of being uniformly distributed on a mucosal tissue, when topically administered to mammals, and to prepare an instillation containing the composition and capable of keeping a lacrimal fluid layer smooth on an ocular surface, by stabilizing the lacrimal fluid layer. SOLUTION: This composition contains polysaccharides, especially agar, and water as essential ingredients. The instillation comprises the composition containing the agar, wherein the composition contains the agar which is precipitated by using a centrifugal separator and conducting centrifugal separation at 40,000×g in an amount of less than 65% based on the total amount of the agar. The instillation is proved to have an excellent stabilizing effect on the lacrimal fluid layer as a result of corneal surface irregularity index variation test. Therefore, the agar-containing instillation has an effect of keeping the lacrimal fluid layer stable on the ocular surface for a long time and is utilizable as an artificial lacrimal fluid.
