PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bistable locking system, maintaining the mechanism in either lock state or unlocked state when the power runs out. SOLUTION: An elevator door restrictor system prevents an elevator door 12 from being opened unless an elevator car 14 is near a floor landing. The system uses a battery backup electronics sensing the presence of a building floor. The elevator door restrictor system continues to maintain the mechanism in the correct state either locked or unlocked even if the elevator car 14 continues to move. Even if the battery backup is completely discharged, the mechanism is maintained in the final state (either locked or unlocked), and whereby opening of the elevator door 12 is prevented until an authorized person takes a suitable measure for moving the elevator car 14 or opening the elevator door 12.
