The cylinder has a channel receiving a retaining device (02) and an associated setting mechanism (13), provided with a hollow body exhibiting a reversible deformation in response to an applied fluid pressure. The holder is inserted in the channel via an opening (07) in the mantle surface of the cylinder, the hollow body setting mechanism having a coupling element at one or both ends which is releasably secured to the cylinder within the channel and which incorporates a pressure medium feed. An independent claim for a method for assembly of a setting mechanism for a sheet edge retaining device in a channel of a printing machine cylinder is also included.
