PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating method for strictly controlling the diameter of a glass tube, particularly the outside diameter and/or the inside diameter of the glass tube in a process of heating the glass tube for example, in the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) method or the collapse method. SOLUTION: In the heating method of the glass tube, the glass tube is heated by arranging an image obtaining means for obtaining the image of the glass tube, arranging a reflection plate at the back place of the glass tube to the image obtaining means, heating the glass tube using a plasma burner, lighting a dark part of the glass tube by reflecting the light radiated from the plasma burner using the reflection plate to irradiate the glass tube, obtaining image information of a portion of the glass tube to be heated using the image obtaining means and measuring the outside diameter and/or the inside diameter of the glass tube from the image information to obtain the measured value of the outside diameter and/or the inside diameter.
