PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure highly reliable defrosting control ensuring food freshness and saving power by optimizing defrosting time, in defrosting control of a refrigerator at a low outside air temperature. SOLUTION: The refrigerator comprises a defrosting heater 13 for defrosting a cooler 11, cooler temperature detecting means 23 for detecting the temperature of the cooler 11, controlling means 33 for energizing the defrosting heater 13 and de-energizing the defrosting heater 13 when the temperature detected by the cooler temperature detecting means 23 reaches a defrosting end temperature, and outside air temperature detecting means 34 for detecting a temperature about the refrigerator. The defrosting end temperature is set lower when the temperature detected by the outside air temperature detecting means 34 is lower than a predetermined temperature than when the temperature detected by the outside air temperature detecting means 34 is higher than the predetermined temperature, so that the defrosting end temperature is near the outside air temperature at which defrosting stabilizes the temperature of the cooler, to enable a short defrosting time, which reduces a temperature rise in food in compartments to keep it fresh.
