A filter medium for separating water from liquid hydrocarbons comprises a porous sheet consisting primarily of interfelted randomly-orientated, fibres, e.g. yucca, esparto, glass, 8 to 12 microns in diameter and preferably approximately 1,5 m.m. long, formed into a sheet approximately 0,01 to 0,03 inches thick. The sheet is preferably rendered water-repellent by impregnation with 15 to 30% by weight of phenol-formaldehyde or epoxy resin and 0,5 to 3% silicone resin. Causticized esparto fibres incorporating up to 30% by weight cotton linters or wood fibres are preferred. The sheet has a maximum pore size such that the bubble pressure (as defined in the Specification) is at least 7 inches and has a pore frequency (defined) such that the product of the bubble pressure and frazier permeability (defined) is at least 200. In use the sheet may be wrapped around a foraminous cylinder, Fig. 2 (not shown), into which the hydrocarbon only, flows.
