PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cancel a trade-off relation of NOx and PM-black smoke in an engine. SOLUTION: This engine control system for a construction machine is provided with the engine 21, a hydraulic pump 22 driven by the engine 21, and EGR control part 23 re-circulating exhaust gas of the engine 21 to a combustion chamber. The EGR control part 23 detects load variation of the engine 21, when operation condition of the engine 21 is turned from a heavy load operation to a light load operation, the quantity of the exhaust gas sent in the combustion chamber is instantly turned off to suppress generation of NOx. When operation condition of the engine 21 is turned from a light load operation to a heavy load operation, the quantity of the exhaust gas is gradually increased to a regular value to suppress generation of PM-black smoke.
