The present invention relates to an apparatus for increasing or reducing the body temperature of a mammal which forms a closed or substantially closed loop conduit when connected to the airways of said mammal, within which a gaseous heat carrier medium may circulate between the airways of the mammal and a heat exchanger unit. The invention furthermore relates to methods of reducing or increasing the body temperature of a mammal, comprising the steps of administering a gaseous heat carrier medium to the airways of said mammal.
