<p>Disclosed herein are methods of treating, preventing, inhibiting, or modulating a viral disease or infection in a subject which comprises administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of at least one compound having the following structural formula wherein X and Y are each independently C or O and R<1> to R<14> are each independently H, Or<a>, Nr<a>R<a>, or COR<a> wherein each Ra may independently be H, a C1-4alkyl which may be substituted or unsubstituted, or C1-4alkoxyl which may be substituted or unsubstituted, SO3H, PO3H2, and wherein R<1> may be absent such that a double bond is formed between C2 and C3 of the ring structure or between C1 and C2 where X is C; and wherein R<10> and R<11> are absent when Y is O. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compounds of the present invention are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods of treating, preventing, or inhibiting a sialidase, and methods of treating, preventing, or inhibiting a cell from being infected by a virus.</p> |
