[Also in Group XXVI] A fluid bearing has two relatively rotatable members which are prevented from being in contact at low relative speeds. In an embodiment, a rotatable member 15 has bearing portions 16-19 thereon which receive a shaft 21 therein and pressurized fluid is supplied to the clearances therebetween. The shaft 21 is supported by a roller bearing 23 which is carried by a member 25 of a nose-cone 26, the latter being attached by struts 27 to a casing 10; and the shaft 21 is supported by a ball-bearing 24 which is carried by members 30 of an exhaust cone 28, the latter being attached by struts 31 to the casing 10. The shaft 21 has thereon a flange 32, which is engageable by a clutch 33 mounted on the member 15; a flange 34 which extends to an inwardly-directed flange 35 so as to form a fluid thrust bearing with a flange 36 of the member 15, said flange 36 being interposed between the flanges 34, 35; and an end-flange 37 engageable by a brake 38, which is carried by a member 40 of the nose-cone 26. At low speeds, the brake 38 is released and the clutch 33 is engaged, thus allowing the shaft 21 to rotate and to carry the member 15. The roller-bearing 23 and the ball-bearing 24 support the assembly. At a predetermined speed, the brake is applied and the clutch is dis-engaged. The shaft is prevented from rotating, whereas the member 15 continues to rotate about the shaft, pressurized fluid being supplied to the bearings 16-19. |
