<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having high response speed and excellent visual field angle characteristics and display quality. <P>SOLUTION: Optical compensation elements 40A and 40B have first retardation plates 43A and 43B and second retardation plates 44A and 44B having retardation in a front direction, respectively.
