PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having high response speed and excellent visual field angle characteristics and display quality.

SOLUTION: Optical compensation elements 40A and 40B have first retardation plates 43A and 43B and second retardation plates 44A and 44B having retardation in a front direction, respectively. When a value obtained by specifying a retardation amount Δn×d to light of each wavelength by retardation amount Δnλ×d to light of a prescribed wavelength is defined as Δn/Δnλ, a specified value Δn/Δnλto light having a wavelength shorter than the prescribed wavelength in the first retardation plate is smaller than the specified value Δn/Δnλin a liquid crystal layer and a specified value Δn/Δnλin the second retardation plate is larger than the specified value Δn/Δnλin the liquid crystal layer.
