<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emission control device for a compression ignition internal combustion engine, for surely emitting NO<SB>X</SB>from a NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst and surely increasing a temperature of the NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst as needed. <P>SOLUTION: A fuel adding valve 14, an HC adsorption catalyst 11, and a NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst 12 are disposed in an engine exhaust passage in this order toward the downstream. When the NO<SB>X</SB>should be emitted from the NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst 12, the smaller amount of fuel than a maximum HC adsorption amount of the HC adsorption catalyst 11 is added to the exhaust gas by the fuel adding valve 14. When the temperature of the NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst 12 should be increased, a larger amount of fuel than the maximum HC adsorption amount of the HC adsorption catalyst 11 is added to the exhaust gas by the fuel adding valve 14. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
