PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separating method excellent in operability, by which a multiple coated optical fiber ribbon can be separated into coated optical fibers in a small space, etc. SOLUTION: By the separating method, the optical fiber ribbon held in a groove part is moved in the longitudinal direction to flaw the optical fiber ribbon, and a plate-shaped separation tool is inserted to a flaw and moved along the flaw and in its extending direction, thereby the optical fiber ribbon can surely be separated to an incompletely separated part and the pull-out root part of the optical fiber ribbon where a cleaving tool cannot be used.
