A cone and belt transmission has the hydraulically driven axially moving primary cones (2) of both the driving and driven parts of the transmission braced by springs (9) and with the spring of the driving part not normally tensioned. The springs are arranged so as not to activate the clutch when the vehicle is being towed and with hydraulic pressure operating on the primary cones. The cone springs can be either a diaphragm or spiral design, with the movement of the springs limited by stops (10).
