<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely emitting NO<SB>X</SB>from a NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst and quickly increase a temperature of an HC adsorption catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: A fuel adding valve 14, the HC adsorption catalyst 11, and the NO<SB>X</SB>occlusion catalyst 12 are disposed in an engine exhaust passage in this order toward the downstream side. The HC adsorption catalyst 11 has a function of evaporating fuel and cracking the evaporated fuel, after adsorbing and holding atomized fuel added in the exhaust gas. When the engine is started and the HC adsorption catalyst 11 is not activated, the fuel adding valve 14 adds the atomized fuel into the exhaust gas so as to make the HC adsorption catalyst 11 adsorb and hold the added atomized fuel. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
